The X tile is worth 8 points — here's how to turn it into a big score.
The X is one of only two letters in Scrabble worth a full 8 points (the other is J). That single tile is heavier than most three-tile words, so a smart placement can swing a whole game. The single best X technique is to place the tile on a double-letter or triple-letter square so that it completes a word across and a 2-letter X word down at the same time. You get paid for both words, and the premium-square bonus applies to each.
Imagine the letter A already sits on the board, and just above it is an open triple-letter square. You play your X on that triple-letter square so that, reading downward, it forms AX. At the same time, the X is the first letter of a longer word you build across — say EXIST.
That one tile just paid you twice. The same trick works with XU built off a stray U, or OX, EX, and XI off the matching vowel. Always scan the board for a vowel or U sitting one square away from a premium spot before you commit the X anywhere else.
